100 CHAPTER 8 GETTING EVERYTHING UP AND RUNNING Note Package is Linux lingo for a complete file that contains everything you need to install a piece of software on your system. You can find the Synaptic Package Manager under the System . Administration menu. Depending on whether the Ubuntu installation program was able to get online, you might find that the Synaptic Package Manager is already set up to use the online repositories. Whatever the case, you should follow these steps to make sure: 1. Select System . Administration . Synaptic Package Manager. Adding and removing software makes system-wide changes, so you ll need to enter your password. 2. In the Synaptic Package Manager window, click Settings . Repositories. 3. Click the Settings button. In the dialog box that appears, make sure there s a check in the Show Disabled Software Sources box, and then click OK. 4. This will activate the source code repositories and will therefore cause confusion when you download software.
